Sports

For this folder I choose to show a group of my drawings and paintings of a variety of Sports images that I have created over the years. One drawing is from life that I proudly once drew at Dupont Circle with 2 other fellow Museum Guards from the Phillips Collection nearby back in the first decade of the 21st Century. I also emphasized the drama of whatever game was being played or the uniqueness of a particular athlete or even a sunset view over a baseball stadium. I hope my viewer sees this well too!

The Ghost of the Iron Man(Cal Ripken)  2000  erased and drawn charcoal  26.50 x 21.25 inches  $300

This erased charcoal drawing was once accepted in a juried art show in St. James, New York in Fall, 2000 titled: "The Art of Baseball." My title for this drawing, "The Ghost of the Iron Man" refers to my ultimate opinion about the former Baltimore Oriole, Cal Ripken. He came to be known as the "Iron Man" for playing baseball for the Baltimore Orioles for

15 years in the last quarter of the 20th Century without missing a game. I'm convinced because of this rare dedicated-even-sometimes-with-injuries-humility for a professional baseball player  he was therefore figuratively like a "ghost" compared to most other celebrity baseball players/athletes, especially the superstars since his ego wasn't the issue. His longevity was and his record of consecutive games played for a decade and a half may never be broken in professional baseball again.

For this color pencil drawing of The Washington National's Trea Turner at bat vs. The Houston Astros in Game 7 of the 2019 World Series, I had great fun and joy creating this picture first from my apartment's TV and then from a Sports Illustrated photograph. My aim for my art viewer was to convincingly show through Turner's focused concentration how significant and meaningful this 2019 World Series was for my fellow Washingtonians and myself. It was truly an American and Nation's Capital Dream come true: It was the first time since 1924 a pro Washington, DC baseball team won The World Series! It took almost a century but it was well worth the wait!!

Chess at Dupont Circle  2003 watercolor 29.50 x 37.75 inches $350

For this watercolor, "Chess at Dupont Circle" that I painted very early in the new 21st Century, I found great joy in showing my art viewer a different side of power in Washington, DC, a redeeming one too.

Since the political powers whether Democrat or Republican are sometimes too powerful in Washington, DC and democracy itself, it's redeeming to see a people's power game played out. Here, in this watercolor, the people's power game, chess is played out well for any citizen whose aim is to be king of the the chess board or table just for one afternoon in Washington, DC's Dupont Circle neighborhood regardless of power or wealth, income. or status.

Winter Chess, Dupont Circle  2013 pencil, ink, ink wash, and chalk pastel, 17 x 21 inches,  $295

For this multi-media ink drawing my purpose was to show the fun and intrigue I found drawing chess players mostly in ink at Dupont Circle one Winter afternoon in 2006. This I enjoyed doing with two other Phillips Collection museum guards when taking a break from our usual guarding job there a few blocks away.

Golf Course in HarwichPort, MA  2010  acrylic  14 x 18 inches  $300

One sunny summer afternoon while on vacation in HarwichPort, Cape Cod I saw this great green golf course and decided to paint it onsight, from life. So after gathering my art easel and folding  stool I sat on the lawn which is on the other side of a tar road in front of this Harwichport golf course. Since I couldn't finish painting it in one afternoon I took several more afternoons painting it with acrylic paints. Since also the golf players were driving their golf balls sometimes a little wild or off course, a few of them bounced my way. Fortunately none of their great golf balls knocked my canvas off my easel or distracted  me from finish painting my painting. This, however, was the first time in my art career any sport balls literally were bombarding me during a sporting event. I hope my viewer sees though that I kept calm and painted a painting that combines landscape trees and grassy golf course lawn in both a realistic and slightly abstract way, at least the golf course's lawn appears that way!

For this College-Level Baseball game played in Harwich, Massachusetts, these two Cape Cod town teams played an intense baseball game under the night stadium lights, called by a professional-like umpire, next to cheering-in-the-stands-fans. With my camera photographing the action behind the game's ballfield's fence, I'm lucky the red and white(Orleans) uniformed pitcher didn't throw a wild, ferocious fastball that could have hit the fence and cracked my camera's zoom lens!
