Sunsets

For this page of my art website I chose to show a group of sunset paintings in various color and sizes. Some are in Cape Cod and some in Washington, DC.

Sunset over Western Avenue  2004  oil  46 x 72 inches  $1, 500

When  first photographing this sunset over a neighbor's house behind the house I grew up in in Washington, DC I decided later to make a very large painting of this scene. So with oil paint I showed an exciting early evening sunset that rises above a normally dull gray house. I also surround it by strong folliage from nearby trees on all four corners. My aim was for the viewer to experience a super special sunset that he or she would not forget.

Cape Cod Sunset  2004  oil  46 x 72 inches

$1,500

For this large sunset I first photographed it over a neighbor's house in Sandwich, Cape Cod. This neighbor was a good friend of my family's when we used to go to this Cape Cod town for summer vacations back in the 1980s and 1990's. My aim was for the viewer to see my appreciation for a friendly neighbor there who performed all kinds of kind gestures to and for my family and me. One note: the boat on top of his  backyard shed/garage has a feeling like you could figuratively sail off into this colorful, attractive sunset!

Sunset_on_21st_Street(Wash._DC), 2009 __

Sunset on 21st    Street(Washington, DC)      2009  acrylic on canvaspaper        28 x 22 inches  $300

One winter evening in the early 2000's, after a long day of museum-guarding at The Phillips Collection near Dupont Circle, Washington, DC, I took out my camera and photographed the intersection of 21st Strret and Massachusetts Avenue under a superb sunset during a deep winter evening. The dark blue sky is lightened up by streaks of light blue, light purple, white red and pink sunset clouds. These hover over baren or dark foliaged trees and gray nuanced buildings lining this side street off Massachusetts Avenue. Speaking of these beautifully dramatic buildings: One curious enough but cool note. One of the smaller buildings down 21st Street's right side happened to once have been one of the 3 gallery's in Washington, DC that once sold and represented my art also in the early 2000's: "Burton Marinkovich Fine Art."

Cape_Cod_Sunset 2, 2009 oil 24 x 30 in

Cape Cod Sunset 2  2009  oil                  24 x 30 inches  $350

For this soul-filled sunset after photographing it above and below tremendous telephone pole lines angled at the top right corner of the canvas, I convince the viewer of two things to appreciate awaringly: First, that like my "Creative Professor" at American University once said that when painting a painting "It's like being on drugs." Except as a creative painter you're "Awesomely on Art!'

Sunset_over_SuperFresh, 2009 oil 24 x 3

Sunset over SuperFresh(Washington, DC)  2009  oil  24 x 36 inches  $375

One early evening before shopping at a former Washingtonian supermarket called "SuperFresh I got out my camera and shot this sunset over the supermarket. When later painting it in oil I made sure to simplify the brick facade and side of the structure. I abstracted it as solid maroon dark flat brick no white mortar included  much like Hopper does with brick houses or buildings. I,therefore, then allowed the viewer to look above and beyond these buildings so he or she could expand his city scenery, expand literally his horizons and take in a solid sunset of moving purple and light orange, pink clouds over streaks of solid sunlight to behold a victoriously freeing vision!
